The Silence That Settles In
Through this work, I explore the distance between hearing a voice, being heard, and simply having someone there.
When I was a child, the television was always on whenever I visited my grandmother’s home. Only later did I realize that she kept it playing even when she wasn’t watching. I began to wonder whether these sounds were less about entertainment than about keeping silence at bay.
Making
For this performance, I removed the casing from a vintage television, painted it, and wore it over my head while sitting quietly beside my grandmother. I became the television, giving a human body to an object that often kept her company when I was away.

The question
By sitting beside her without speaking, I wanted to consider what changes when recorded voices are replaced by someone’s physical presence. A television can fill a room with conversation, but it cannot respond to its listener. Through this work, I explore the distance between hearing a voice, being heard, and simply having someone there.
